Day 29 – Ban Krut to Prachuap Khiri Khan
Leaving Ban Krut at 6am was a good idea, we managed to arrive in the provincial capital of Prachuap Khiri Khan before light rain blanketed the town. It was a breezy 75 kms into town and we managed to do nearly 50% of the journey before breakfast.
We left Kasama’s house and waved goodbye, she has been a great host (and a new friend) for the last 4 days and 5 nights, a lovely break from cycling. Today’s ride was slow, only 18.7 kms per hour. I really don’t know why we did it a few kilometres slower than previous days after such a long rest period. Maybe it was because we ate too much food and did too little exercise, the most I recall accomplishing in Ban Krut was sitting in the pool and soaking.
With such a short day of cycling we didn’t do much and we didn’t encounter anything amazing. We’ve cycled this section in the other direction 3 times and it was nice to see it from another direction of travel, but really it was rather uneventful.
The only real bicycle related news was that John (from Bicycle Thailand who rode with us today) had a flat tire as we rolled into town centre. It was nothing he didn’t have fixed in less than 10 minutes as we chatted to the lady at the Provincial Tourism Office (not the TAT but a province run enterprise) of Prachuap Khiri Khan. She knew all about us and our trip!
It was the first time anybody who we had not contacted previously had heard about our story, seen our photos, and knew about our trip information from facebook.com (we believe). It was nice not to have to explain our story in length to her and she quickly got our log book entry completed for us and wished us luck on the rest of our journey.
As you know we have been searching for bicycle shops to add to BicycleThailand.com’s shop index during our adventure. After hearing of a couple of possible bicycle shops we searched high and low but found nothing in this area. I believe this is the first Amphoe Mueang without its own decent bicycle shop, apparently the closest one is in Pranburi (which we’ve never seen), but even more likely to be in Hua Hin or Chumphon. A little sad really 🙁
Finally, we went to see the monkeys at the Wing 5 Air Force base, which is between Ao Manao and Ao Prachuap. These monkeys are known as Dusky Langurs and are very lovely and non aggressive. Natt fed them some nuts while I tended to the bicycle and John tried to get some snapshots of us with these lovely creatures. During the photo session we were lucky enough to have our bicycle christened by monkey pee, I’m sure in Thailand that must be good luck.
